A: The Kids' Cancer Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) foundation established in 2001 by a group of physicians, nurses, parents and community leaders. Our mission is to coordinate medical and supportive care services for local children and families battling cancer and/or a serious blood disorder. The goal of the foundation is to raise the funds for the first outpatient cancer treatment center for children in our community.
Q: Why is the outpatient center needed?
A: Even though 75% of children with cancer can now be cured, it is the number one disease killer of children in the US. Luckily, the majority of childhood cancer treatment can be done on an outpatient basis. For instance, a child diagnosed with leukemia will average approximately 135 outpatient visits during their treatment. Even though the third largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida reside within Palm Beach County, we have no pediatric outpatient treatment center! Instead, our youngest and most vulnerable residents of Palm Beach County, sick as can be, often need to travel out of their neighborhoods, away from the support of family and friends, far from their siblings and relatives, to other treatment centers in Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando and Tampa.
Q: Why should you support the Kids' Cancer Foundation?
A: There is no comprehensive coordination of supportive care services for these children and their families. Many are not receiving the care they need. The Kids' Cancer Foundation coordinates their own medical and supportive care services as well as those services already established in the community. This has been shown to increase a child's chance for survival and quality of life.
Q: Who sits on your Board of Directors?
A: The Kids' Cancer Foundation is unique because it is governed by an Executive Board comprised of parents of children who have been diagnosed with cancer or a serious blood disorder, healthcare professionals and community leaders. All are dedicated and experienced in the unique medical and supportive care needs of children with cancer or a blood disorder.
